The Chester City Hall and Opera House is one of the most architecturally significant buildings in Chester, SC and was once the focal point of government as well as social and cultural events in the community. A 1929 fire ravaged the structure, severely damaging the main entrance tower and most of the interior of the building. The damaged portions of the building were rebuilt and repaired however the auditorium, which served as the opera house, was not restored. Today the building houses the city’s administrative offices and police department. In 2009 the City of Chester observed several areas of concern regarding the weather tightness and structural stability of the historic building.
